the other side of the coin

Down by the street, he decided to walk. He wasn’t sure why of all days he felt the need to just walk somewhere crowded.
Down by the street, he decided to stop. Just for that cup of coffee he needed badly. With a magazine and a cup of coffee in hand, he sat down and watched the street get busier.

That’s when he thought he saw someone familiar. He thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. Maybe it was because his mind was a little too occupied with all these thoughts. But somehow, he just needed to make sure. He looked around for a while, till his eyes settled on her. The girl in jeans and plain white t-shirt, with that same beautiful smile. His heart stopped for a while. He realized he had been holding his breath. There she was, sitting a few tables away from him. The girl who walked away a long time ago was sitting just a few meters away.

He watched her with her friend. She looked happy and contented. She still had that dazzling smile. She still wore her hair the same. She looked different though. It was in her eyes. He smiled as he watched her talk and laugh with her friend. He knew they were making fun of the odd looking couple across from them. He knew because he used to do that with her. He didn’t realize he missed her so much that it started to hurt. He didn’t think he felt that much for her before. But he was lying to himself. He was selfish. Afraid to get a little burnt.

He wasn’t sure if he should go up to her. He was a little worried about her reaction. Then he started remembering all those times she was in his life. The late night phone conversations, the silly messages. He knew why he did what he did back then. But till today, he never understood why she just disappeared. He wasn’t sure if she still thought about him. Or if she even missed him. He remembered the many nights he sat in front of his phone wondering if he should get through to her by other means. But he knew why he didn’t. He knew he caused it. She had given him her heart and he left it on the shelf, knowing that it’ll always be there whenever he wanted it. He just realized a little too late that sometimes, these things aren’t meant to be taken advantage of. And sometimes, pride just gets in the way of everything.

He finished up his coffee, grabbed his magazine and decided that maybe they could start all over again. He knew he was ready. All that he had been worried about before was in the past. He needed to do this. Maybe that’s why his mind was so damn occupied with her in it. He felt a little foolish for feeling nervous.

“Mummy! Come look at this”, he heard someone call out. And right before his eyes, he saw her pick up the little boy and walked towards the aquarium in the cafe, laughing as she listened to the little boy in her arms telling her a story. He froze for a long while. His eyes blurred. His mind went blank. And for a while, down by the street, the world faded away.

Down by the street, he decided to walk. He wasn’t sure why of all days. Down by the street, he decided to stop, to collect himself.

Little did he know, that down by the street…
